What Food Is Not

By Rosie Peters

If you are going to succeed on a weight control diet and lose fat forever, you may have to change your thinking when it comes to food. Food is a source of nutrition and should be as fresh as possible, well prepared and taste good. The food you eat should consist of the best possible mix of mainly complex carbs, proteins and unsaturated fats. It should contain more than enough vitamins and minerals to keep you as fit and healthy as you can get.

That is what food is - fuel for your grateful body.

Now here is what food is not, despite what you've conveniently kidded yourself into believing all these years. But maybe I'm being a bit harsh on you. You have been encouraged to believe a lot of the following rubbish about food in order that peddlers of salty, sugary, fatty treats can increase their sales through creative use of the mass media.

Food is not the devil incarnate. Food cannot lure you into irresistible temptation so that you suffer a private hell every day from what you have been forced to consume against your will. You are not doing a deal with Beelzebub when you cram another cream cake into your slathering jaws. No one and nothing forces you to eat calorie dense foods. Food is not singing you a siren song. You are dancing to your own tune and it's time to change the CD.

Food is not the love of your life. There is a lot of hype going around about "sexy" food. When you watch a "cooking show" and a voluptuous female presenter with her cardigan barely buttoned over her heaving bosom peers at you with seductive overtones and undertones and every semitone in between, while licking chocolate mousse off a long wooden spoon, you have to be a bit skeptical. Look, whatever she's selling, it's not food. I think it could be her cookbooks actually, but give us a break. Food is not a stand in for sex or love. Calorie rich food will mean that there is more of you to love, but is no substitute for love itself.

If you have no one to love, get yourself a dog. At least it will appreciate your loving attentions and take you for calorie burning walkies. Food will not. Food is inanimate and will not return any affection you foolishly lavish upon it.

Food is not the ruler of your universe. Your life cannot revolve around the next meal or snack. If it does, you will find yourself fixating on eating to the detriment of other worthwhile things you could be thinking about, like what type of dog to get. You have to make conscious decisions about what you eat, when you eat and how much you eat. Plan your meals for each day in advance or you will end up eating whatever is convenient and we all know about the downside of convenience foods.

You have to rule your dietary habits. Make informed food choices, knowing that what you choose will affect your health and fitness now and for your future.

If you are serious about losing fat, you have to change your perceived relationship to food. Get off the back foot and take control of your diet.

Food is not evil, it is not sexy and you must not kid yourself that it rules your life for one more minute.
